Peter has been an active member of St John for over 40 years and retired from paid roles in 2022. He began as a volunteer (honorary assistant) on the North Shore ambulances in 1975. He is in his 3rd term with the St John North Shore Area Committee and is currently secretary.
Peter has experience in many ambulance operational and senior management roles based in Auckland for the Northern Region and (previous) Central Region, and in the Northern Region South Island based in Christchurch. His responsibilities included leading the business planning and contracting aspects of the emergency ambulance service (EAS) and patient transfer services (PTS) nationally.
Peter has also gained knowledge and experience outside of St John in roles such as the Auckland Region Manager for ProCare Health Ltd (Primary Care). This role was a key account management function between ProCare Health Ltd as the Primary Health Organisation and the Auckland District Health Board. The role also interacted with other NGOs, PHOs and DHBs so that a collaborative approach to the delivery and coordination of initiatives to assist with population health improvements was achieved and developed.
Peter has also held a Health Sector Advisor role at ACC headquarters and was involved in the development and launch of the PRIME system and investigated air ambulance needs for New Zealand. He has also been involved in medical equipment sales.
Peter has been at the forefront of St John leading in strategic planning, direction, and major projects for decades. Through his diligence and responsiveness, he has had a major impact on the work of St John with such successes as medical alarms, ambulance double crewing, the National Air Desk, better contractual arrangements and securing more successful funding flows.
He is enjoying contributing to the organisation in new roles as a member of Priory Chapter and the Order Affairs Committee, supported by his wife Rachel.
