What is an AED or defibrillator? A Defibrillator or Automated External Defibrillator (AED) or is a lifesaving device that can help save the life of someone experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest. They are easy to use, portable, with clear step-by-step instructions so anyone can use them, from a bystander to a trained professional.

How can a defibrillator save a life?

Each year, over 2,000 New Zealanders have a  sudden cardiac arrest. That’s over 6 people per  day. For every minute defibrillation is delayed  the chance of survival decreases by about 10%.

By using a defibrillator and doing CPR you can increase someone’s chances of survival by over 44%. This is because CPR helps to keep the person’s vital organs alive whilst the defibrillator shocks the heart back to a normal rhythm.

The probability of survival goes up dramatically when CPR is performed and when a defibrillator is applied before an ambulance arrives.

Our goal is to improve the accessibility of defibrillators to be available for use by every day New Zealanders.

The more accessible defibrillators out in our communities and the more confident people are in using them, the more likely a person will survive a cardiac arrest out-of-hospital.

Defibrillators in communities save lives.
