Construction of a new ambulance station will begin in Levin in the coming weeks thanks to the “tremendous” fundraising efforts of the local community.
The new site, on Liverpool Street, has been blessed by tangata whenua Muaūpoko Tribal Authority, and work to prepare the land for construction is now underway.
Replacing the old ambulance station on Seddon Street, the modern facility will include a six-bay parking garage for ambulances and other emergency vehicles, built to Importance Level Four (IL4) standard, meaning the station will be operational immediately after an earthquake or other disastrous events.
Other features include six resting areas for shift workers, office and meeting space, training space, a wash bay for vehicles, 14 car parks for staff and visitors, a kitchen and communal area, showers and bathroom facilities, and ample storage room. Construction will be carried out by W&W Construction.
Brendon Hutchinson, Hato Hone St John District Operations Manager, says the facility will serve the Horowhenua district for decades to come.
“This station was first planned in 2008, so we’re extremely proud to see it coming to fruition. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the tremendous generosity of the community who have donated so selflessly, and our staff and volunteers who have worked so tirelessly.”
Mr Hutchinson says the new station will enhance Hato Hone St John’s emergency response capabilities in the region.
“The Levin station acts as a hub for surrounding towns in the district, so having a dedicated training area for staff and extra parking space for emergency vehicles is going to make all the difference.
“The ample size of the Liverpool Street site also allows for two more parking spaces to be added in the future, while the new bathroom facilities and rest areas will provide extra comfort for our staff.”
Fundraising efforts for the project are still ongoing, with more than $1 million raised so far. The majority of funds have been generated through the Levin Hato Hone St John retail store, along with donations from the community.
The milestone comes as Hato Hone St John marks its Annual Appeal this month. Donations to the appeal will go towards lifesaving equipment such as a Major Incident Support Team (MIST) vehicle for the Hawke’s Bay, to help emergency staff reach people during extreme weather events.
Funds will also go towards power supply generators for ambulance stations across Aotearoa New Zealand to ensure emergency services are maintained during major incidents.
