St John tips for an enjoyable Christmas

Ngaire Jones |

The Christmas break is a time to catch up with friends and family, and for many of us to take a well-earned break from school and work.

But for St John frontline staff, it’s one of the busiest times of the year, as they respond to collapses, falls, chest pain, breathing problems, vehicle crashes, and so much more.

Domestic incidents and heart attacks increase in what can be a stressful lead up to Christmas for some families. St John is also appealing to people to look after themselves throughout the holidays, as they enjoy the celebrations and festive season, but to look after others too.

Sarah Manley, Director of Community Health Services, says many people feel isolated at Christmas and it’s important for to care for those in the community and look out for neighbours who live alone.

“Christmas can be a very difficult and sad time for many, emphasising their isolation and loss of loved ones. Connect with older people around you, especially those who may be unwell, as this time can increase physical and mental health problems.”

The warm weather brings everyone outdoors, so St John has put together some tips on how to keep safe.

  • Remember to get your prescription medicine supplies from your GP before going on holiday, as pre-existing medical conditions can quickly become emergencies if medicine isn’t available.
  • Drink sensibly, drink equal amounts of water, have a sober driver, and know your limits.
  • Be safe on the roads, watch your speed, be courteous to other drivers, and drive responsibly.
  • Keep children away from the barbeque.  Find our top tips for treating burns.
  • The best way to avoid sunburn is to keep covered, but if you do find yourself with a serious sunburn, keep the skin well moisturised and if the person is feeling very unwell, or large blisters appear, see a doctor.
  • Keep batteries and small parts from Christmas gifts way from children to avoid swallowing, as the battery can become lodged in the oesophagus with dangerous results.
  • Keep safe around water, please wear life jackets when boating and supervise children at the beach or swimming pool.
  • Know your location, to help us get to you as quickly as possible when you need us.
  • Be prepared, travel with a St John first aid kit, and download the FREE St John CPR app.

St John wishes everyone a relaxing and safe summer.
