St John New Zealand has won the International Cadet Competitions held in Sydney, Australia this month and has been awarded the Commonwealth Cadet Shield.
The global cadet competitions involve national teams of four competing in various emergency drills and scenarios designed to test the cadets’ clinical skills, team work, patient care, communication and problem solving skills.
The New Zealand team came first in Pairs CPR, Pairs Trauma and the Individual Drill while taking second place for the Team Nursing Test and third in Public Relations to take out the overall Championship title.
The team’s week gives St John New Zealand back-to-back Championship titles after winning the last international series in Christchurch, in 2010 - but this is the first time a New Zealand team has won overseas and under Australian clinical standards.
The Cadet Competitions are held every three to four years during a ten-day St John International Cadet Camp. The 2014 Camp brought together 450 young people and leaders from St John Priories and Associations around the globe including Canada, England, Wales, South Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Solomon Islands, and Sri Lanka in an exciting action-packed program that included an international gala dinner, adventure parks, abseiling, archery, sight-seeing and international relations.
Sixty New Zealand Cadets and Leaders arrived in Sydney on 2 January with the international competitions taking place on 6 January.
The next St John International Cadet Camp will take place in Hong Kong in 2016.
