Emma has been part of Hato Hone St John for over a decade in paid and unpaid roles, and has been an employee of Kim Young & Sons for 6 years. Not only is Emma a part of the company, but she is also part of the family – she is the partner of one of Kerry’s sons with whom she has children with. Emma says that Kim Young & Sons allows her the flexibility to fulfil her ambulance duties. She mentions that the company mucks in where needed in the community with one example of them helping other EMT’s onto roads that have been closed using Kim Young & Sons equipment. Emma says “These guys are so caring, so I wanted to spotlight them. The support they give me for my role in Hato Hone St John is unwavering and allows me the flexibility to head offsite to help those in need anytime.”
Employee Kerry says that for Kim Young & Sons Emma’s volunteer work is as important within the community as well as inside the company. “In our community everyone knows each other so we drop everything to help when needed. Having Emma on staff has empowered others to look out for warning signs onsite and have the confidence to reach out if they have any cause for concern.”
She gives the example of a diabetic employee who collapsed in the packhouse. “Having our staff see this happen and how Emma was able to treat this staff member opened the conversation about how we can look after each other’s health. Emma regularly stops by to see how our people are going and gives welcome advice to younger staff members who may need it.”
Kerry doesn’t think twice about Emma ducking off to a Hato Hone St John shift as she says “We can deal with potatoes and carrots anytime, but if someone is in need then it’s important to drop everything to help. It’s just what we think is right. It’s important for us to give Emma the space to pursue her passion and care for others.”
