- Why have I got a bill for using the ambulance?
St John ambulance Services are not fully government funded. Contracts with the Ministry of Health, ACC and District Health Boards fund nearly 70% of our Ambulance Service direct operating costs. The shortfall needs to be made up from other areas; these include community donations, fundraising, revenue from our commercial activities, the contribution of our volunteers, as well as contributions from part charges. - I didn’t call the ambulance, why do I have to pay?
If you’re attended by an ambulance officer and/or transported in an ambulance because of a medical emergency, you’ll need to pay this charge even if someone else calls the ambulance for you. Find out more about Part Charges

- I have been charged as an overseas visitor but I was born in NZ, what do I need to do?

- Is there a reciprocal agreement in place for people from other countries?

- What is a private ambulance transfer?
Patient transfer ambulances can be booked for non-emergency private transfers where the patient requires stretcher transport, ie they are not able to sit. This might be to pick up a loved one from an aged care facility and take them to an appointment, or to take someone home after discharge from hospital. There is a user charge for this service, based on the kilometres travelled, and the cost of this type of transfer is not covered as part of the annual ambulance membership or home alarm schemes. - Can St John take me to medical appointments?
Hato Hone St John provides a Health Shuttle service to various medical centres and hospitals around the country. This is run by volunteers and relies on donations from users of the service. Please refer to the Health Shuttle page for more information.
- Where can I pay my ambulance invoice?
There are many ways to pay your Invoice.
St John ambulance invoices can be paid at any NZ Post Shop. Take your original invoice and it will be scanned to ensure that your payment is allocated to that invoice.
Call 0800 ST JOHN to pay your invoice over the phone by credit card, or have a number of other payment options available for you.

- I can’t afford to pay in one lump sum, can I arrange to pay off my ambulance invoice?
Yes, please call 0800 ST JOHN to make payment arrangements.
- What is your bank account number?
We have different account numbers, depending on what your payment is for. If you have received an invoice without an account number, please phone 0800 ST JOHN to obtain the relevant details.
- If an ambulance is called for me but I am not transported, will I be charged?
Yes, you will be charged if you are attended to by Hato Hone St John, even if you are not transported.
- What information do you need when I pay my ambulance invoice?
Hato Hone St John requires your customer number and invoice number to make sure your payment goes to the correct invoice.
- I was treated and transported by ambulance, why haven’t I received an invoice?
This patient part charge only applies to ambulance attendance or transport for medical emergencies, or accident related injuries that are older than 24 hours. Find out more about Part Charges
